Weekend Work the Weakness Woman!
Went to bed feeling every thruster of Jackie in my quads. Fortunately none of that "reach for the chair so that you can sit" type stiffness.
Knowing that real progress is only wrought with your own will, I set off this afternoon for some sort of effort in the neighborhood gym. My only goal was to work for about 45 mins while the rest of the gang hit the pool. Probably not the best plan, but a good workout none the less.
1k row (5:05)
800m run
30 airs squats
800m run
25 8 lb med ball sit ups
800m run
25 sit ups
800 m run
25 sit ups
800m run (4:36)
I don't have a watch and really can't use the clock in the gym, but it was about 40 mins worth of effort and puts in my 5th workout and 3rd metcon for the week.
Long metcon of my weaknesses... running and core... almost assuages my guilt for doing a short benchmark on First Friday.

WOD 090807
First Friday.
GORGEOUS morning. Only 63 degrees and I about bagged CF to just run a 5k along the Potomac. It is nice out - to include a full moon - it is hard to imagine that they are forecasting 98 this weekend with probably matching humidity.
Yesterday's cleans have left me "same day" sore, but it was in a new place. Normally it is the back of my shoulders that gets it, but this time it is over the top of the shoulder. Good news is it just feels like workout sore... even amount of discomfort in both shoulders and nothing unbearable.
My first WOD of the day was the sprint to Karolin's night terror at 0315 which put a damper on the energy this morning. I opted for the shorter Jackie (1k row, 50 45#thrusters, 30 pullups) over the longer Kelly and was hoping to show some improvement. Thomas got in on it with me, doing his first thrusters. The rowing was a bit slow... about 5:05. The thrusters went in 15, 10, 10, 8, and 7. I did about 1/3 of the pullups with my purple floss, the rest with the red. Time 15:10 - only 5 seconds faster than last time in May. BUT, I did it with a 45# load this time, as opposed to the 33# training bar last time.
Good stuff.

WOD 090806 - updated
Cleans 3, 3,3,3,3,3... ad infinitum
More later about form, but managed to eek out 90 for 3, although the spacing and the miss, made it more like 4 singles at 90 with a miss on the 3rd.
The rest...
I worked alone today as the gym was thin. Not surprising since tomorrow is First Friday and lots of people take an anticipatory rest day to gear up for their poison.
I started this with just the 33 lb bar adn then did 55, 65, 75, 80, 80, 85, 90. Lots of work on form. The big mental cues I worked on were Jerry's comments about how the pull is different from the deadlift at the start. I really concentrated on getting my knees back out of the way, but not locking to a deadlift. For the most part the pull is there, in varying amounts of agression, but I think I have most of it. The problem is finishing the move - getting under the bar, opening my hands, whipping elbows. All things I heard before, plus Keturah's comment, "Why are you stopping?" I don't think I have a very good answer for that other than if the sequence of moves was tombe, pas de bouree, glissade, pas de chat; I probably wouldn't be getting it all together without lots of work and more than likely there would be a transition or two between steps that would be awkward, full of hesitation and need work. (probably the glissade to the pas de chat)
So now, the question is how to work that part of the movement to get it better. Quick answer is back off the load and do a gazillion reps at a lower weight. And it probably wouldn't hurt to work other "dive under the bar" moves... snatch drops come to mind. Part of my failure is definitely a lack of agressive explosive movement; the other part is the balance. I'm starting to wonder if it is sort of like wrecking a car for the first time. I need to try to dive under a nice heavy barbell and pitch it, landing flat on my tookus and just get over it.
I think I cleaned 90 lbs about 8 times this morning before I got 3 of them done close enough together to call it a set.
Now for tomorrow... what's my poison

Sick of Food
That's right, I've had it. In the last 4 years of my life alone, I've wrangled more with food than a fork in a plate of twisted spaghetti. Some bullets from my (dys)functional resume for my next job as an evil scientist somewhere in the food industry....
- Happily heading in the right health direction after baby #4
- Realizing that surprise! baby #5 is helping eat off the last few pounds
- Surviving the 10 weeks of bed riddening all day "morning sickness" that left me eating only grilled mozzarella on white bread sandwiches, rice, plain pasta, and seltzer water.
- Watching 200 pass on the scale for the second time in my life.
- Losing 50 lbs in 6 mos after learning that baby #4 , age 3.5, has a genetic disorder, autism and all bets are off for newborn baby #5
- Reading every bit of the dietary guidelines for children with autism to include the nearly unpalatable GCF diet.
- Holding kids through blood draws, skin prick testing, food challenges, ENT scoping, barium swallows
- Panicking when I've left the house without an epipen
- Driving in DC traffic with little one vomiting from anesthesia after upper/lower GI investigative studies
- Listening to more than one endocrinologist, gastroenterologist, allergist say "I don't know... that's really the area of an ____ " (insert name of another specialist)
- Having my primary care manager tell me I had a "myopic" view of the world - didn't you just hear that I'm also looking at homeopathic aids to my health?
- Rereading Eat Right For Your Type - that's how I got it together in my 30's
- Reading Entering the Zone, Mastering the Zone and Toxic Fat - that's what everyone in the gym is doing
- Reading such literary wisdom as Feeling Fat, Fuzzy and Frazzled?
- Rereading The South Beach Diet - why not, it's on the shelf
- Exploring The Primal Blueprint and Paleo - they are really not that far off Blood Type O
- Suffering the head explosion from all the conflicting information - check out cauliflower, oats or sweet potatoes
- Reading The End of Overeating
- Finding huge quantities of candy and junk food wrappers in teenager rooms, when I never buy the stuff
- Having adverse reactions to medicines my doctor said I just had to take.
- Finding passing solace in a glass of wine, amaretto, or something much stiffer
- Suffering the night sweats that go with such solace at my age
- Weighing, measuring and logging my food
- Eating more vegetables for breakfast than most Americans eat all day
- Denying my Italian heritage and eating 1/2 cup servings of pasta
- Eating meat portions small enough to inhale
- Teaching myself to like scrambled eggs
- Trying to eat a diet rich in nuts in a house with a child who could die from ingesting them
- Inspecting every geometrically shaped food diagram and all the literature about what is wrong with the government's view on nutrition
- Trying to get excited about cooking when your kid is allergic to wheat, corn, oat, barley, rye, milk, eggs, most nuts, and peanuts
- Discovering that it is possible to eat healthy in a restaurant, but not worth the effort
- Realizing that organic food is never going to be in the budget of a family of seven.
- Listening to the grumbles and watching the eyerolls at the suggestion of adding an apple to that teenage grilled cheese sandwich
- Watching the dh do the typical male thing and lose all the necessary weight in 6 weeks, while I hang around my new plateau for who knows how long.
- Trying to remember that NONE of it is necessary for salvation.
- Trying to find the blessing in living in our world of plenty
- Wondering what Heaven will be like; because as I understand it, it won't be guiltless ice cream, but the peace of not having any need, desire, or passion for food at all.
Rant over. Time to go cook dinner.... AGAIN.
WOD 090804
Back Squat 5,5,5,5,5
55, 75, 85, 95, 105, 115, 120 (3)
Core tension is better, but still needs work. Took out the medicine ball today to work on depth. Achilles felt good throughout, so the stretch was there. Grip and rack need work as well to get the wrists straight. Not ready to join a piano moving company, but this does feel better than a couple of months ago. Unfortunately I've missed working back squats several times.
Started adding 500mg of Ester-C at bedtime to see if it helps with the diet at all. Robb Wolf has a post about it helping to reduce cortisol levels. Trying hard to be lights out by 10pm as well.

OMM - On My Mind
Memo to self and I guess warning to others. There are a bunch of things bugging my noggin and keeping me from a good night's sleep. So that means it's time to write or (w) rant as the topic goes.
Look for some upcoming posts... not for the faint of heart.
Ignorance in the information age... How in the world of RSS and iphones, can I repeatedly get the shoulder shrug about so many current news topics? Yes, a rant!
Faith AND Reason... How does a woman - Susan Jacoby - write a best seller claiming that people of faith are unreasonable fundamentalists? Perhaps she would like to hear why highly educated people of faith refer to the Enlightenment as the Second Dark Ages.
The common priesthood and its relationship to the ordained priesthood. This is one where I think little is being said, but much needs to be. Perhaps if there were a better understanding of the former, there would be more vocations to the latter.
Okay, lost? Don't worry... all my sweaty WOD postings will still be there. And remember, I write so that I can sleep.

Team Workout.
Power Snatch, Pullups, Push Press, Box Jumps, Row
Not telling anything else... no leaking since this is a "fittest class" competition. Just get in there and do it.
And I say that because I just didn't want to. Most every day in the box you work against your personal fitness demons and push for progress. And when you have this right attitude, you can take joy in small amounts of progress and bask in the motivation of working out with a great bunch of people. For me that gets turned on it head when we do these team competitions. It is really hard for the kid who was always picked first for the spelling bee, math challenge, you name it academic competition and among the last for dodge ball to get excited about team workouts. It doesn't take too much math skill to know putting me into the mix can pull down the class average.
Today's workout had 3 overhead moves (yes I count pullups as overhead) so I was really dreading what I was going to do. Shoulders have been "crunchy", achilles have been tight, and my carpal tunnel has been almost on fire at times this past week. I wasn't thinking about ducking this one for a rest day, I was looking to see if I was due for a week off.
But what I lack in athletic ability, I try to make up for in attitude which can be changed at will even if your pullup strength can't. So I plotted it out. Make sure you do every exercise, so there is no averaging any zeros, use the FGB guidance and don't work more than 1 minute at any one exercise, do Pullups first so you can chalk off the clock, and don't put your bum on the row too much... it doesn't generate points. Do everything in multiples of 5 so that you can remember the numbers and not have to stop to write.
So while I had a little trouble settling in with the overheads - the grips are way different for push press and snatch, I got alot done. I was also rewarded with a whole bunch of box jumps which I haven't done since I fell doing double unders back in May. Sure I stumbled one (and Jerry was watching!!) but nothing that didn't keep me jumping. I did my pull ups with a purple band instead of red.
0515 is the guinea pig class and we may not finish on top, but it was still a great day in the box. Everyone got a great workout, and when everyone is working their best instead of their weakness, it is almost like the crossfit games... you get to see some amazing stuff. 172 freaking box jumps... yay Soni! Torch set a new max pullup PR at 35 I think.
Now off to the really scary stuff and the reminder that young at heart only goes so far... annual mammogram today. But this is one category where my endurance has paid off... having had 5 children and breastfed them all, actually reduces my risk of cancer.

OHS or FS for the less shoulder stable. Hmm guess which?
Rolled in late for the 0900 class after dropping off Christopher for Vacation Bible School and since I'm out of teenagers (mixed blessing) I had Karolin in tow. This makes it way harder to have your head in the game, plus she was less thrilled with watching today without her brother. Some of the heavier music we play started to upset her too, so this WOD was get it done.
5 sets 3 rep front squats
55, 75, 85, 95, 105 (f), 100 (eh, form)
Tons of fun to work with Elise who just finished her bar exam, especially since I was reading her dad's book last night - The End of Overeating. Not my best day in the gym, but I was able to work on my weakness. I will have to search the ning site to see what my best 3 rep front squat is. I'm not sure where I need to focus next on this other than I know it doesn't need to be load, but flexibility and balance. I wonder if the former naturally progresses the latter, or if I specifically need to work them both. I really tried today to work on holding my breath and stabilizing my core, but I still really have trouble getting my shoulder rack up so that it is holding the bar with little guidance from my hands.
Christopher handed me his VBS t-shirt when I picked him up... "A saint is one who never quits trying." - St. Francis of Assisi
Just the right coaching point for a day when everything from diet to flexibility needs work.

WOD 090730
Day off from CF
Slow 2 miles on a treadmill to test out the new shoes one more time.
Definitely need 1/2 size smaller.
Slightly aware that I was deadlifting yesterday... which means form still needs work.

Rest Day - NOT !
Tight tookus from jumping lunges or not
Tired of 0430 wake ups or not
Truck fire on the beltway or not
I just can't miss deadlifts
5 sets 3 rep DL; record max effort
My new PR is 195.
Progression - 85, 105, 125, 145, 175, 195 PR, 205 (f)
At 175, I started to lose form coming forward on my feet. 195 was better and then I started to feel tired and all the lower body effort from yesterday. Perhaps if I had only gone for 200, I might have gotten it, but that remains to be seen. Take the PR on a rest day and go home happy.
I made it to the 0900 class today and got to meet some new CF people. Fun to meet new faces and talk to the people behind the WB and pictures from other classes. Super cool to discover among the super strong we have a classically trained tuba player. Music is a big part of my life - it truly builds me up. Amazing to meet highly skilled people and a good reminder that crossfit can be for anyone who desires to be strong and fit. I need that today as I look at the video of my PR. I can be happy about the number on the bar, but not so about the bumper plate that I am still carrying around my middle. I actually untagged the video on FB, and then thought better of it. Standing eyeball to eyeball with the demon is the first step to taking him down.
Tighter zone, more running on my time, more sleep... less sitting on my butt in traffic please!

Tuesday's Metcon burn
Warm up - toe walks, high knee skips, side shuffles. Partner 15 sec on off L-sit holds for 2 mins. Partner again JSB's 15 secs on off for 2 mins
WOD 5 RFT
300m sprint
20 jumping lunges... do them on a bumper plate if you can
10 pullups
my effort - 16:13 -- A really intense lay on the floor gasser!
New shoes got a quick break in. Today I notice tiny hot spots but otherwise they are good. I think I may be opting for some more legit socs than the thin liners I have been using. The new running shoes do have the room. I almost wonder if they aren't too big. But I love having room for my toes. My shins seem okay with the running today.. .but there wasn't much distance to cover. Mostly bus dodging this morning.
I tried the jumping lunges on a plate which lasted about 3 reps until I realized that I am just not that coordinated yet. My consolation was that I couldn't even think about doing these plyometrically last fall and this time I made it through about 75% of them actually jumping and not stepping back.
Pullups were on a red band. I just don't know what's up in my shoulder strength. The red's too easy, but floss too hard at the moment.
Shout out to Kim who gave me a speed target today. Nice work lady.
Afterwork was sledge strikes and burpees. I refused the burpees and did more 3 more rounds of JSL's and 8 lb sledge strikes. Not sure why but the 12lb was bothering the same area of the back of my arms. So... no pushing it.
I loved this workout... the WOD was short but with the warmup and extra, it made for a great long burn!

WOD 090727
Strict Press, Push Press, Push Jerk 3 singles each
69/74/DNF
DNF - Pain!
Not surprising. I knew I was in trouble when I couldn't hit a press at 70. Push presses maxed at 74. And I was in too much pain to do the jerks.
I was in absolutely no pain when I went into the gym and I am in no pain now. I was in no pain when I wasn't lifting. But as soon as I was moving weight above my head today, I had pain from shoulder to elbow running along the back side on both arms. The best I can gather is that it is nerve pain from something getting pinched. This is particularly frustrating because the dh gave me an awesome backrub yesterday and I was feeling great. After Friday's pushups it felt tight for a couple days to get my hands clasped behind my head, so perhaps there is still some soreness/swelling that is pushing on something.

WOD 090725
Rest Day.
Went to bed last night with the shins really hurting. Go figure? The snatches were Thursday. Better this morning, but still there. The wrists are feeling better and puttering in the yard is the WOD of the day. Lots of H2O and plans for a run tomorrow.

A new title
Thomas was the push to change it... something about "did you pick that?" that really added fire to the crucible of thought. I need a title for my blog... NOW.
And of course, I have Christopher to thank for the new title. I need to pluck around and see what his orginal source was, but this has become his catch phrase whenever he makes a mistake. It truly helps him not be crushed by his mistakes.
It's all part of the plan ... more or less!
I really like it. Lots of days go by when my plans fall apart - I wanted a PR in the gym, I wanted to get more gardening done, I wanted to be more patient. But often that is because I'm looking too closely at that plan with the little p instead of the Plan with the big P.
We had a nanny for 4 years who we all adored for her amazing ability to turn life's failures into "happy accidents". It is amazing the things you find when you pour the wrong spice into a dish. It may well be quite delicious... even if it wasn't part of the plan.

A new blog
So here begins a new thread in my tapestry. After much bugging, I'm moving to the "dark side" and starting a new blog here. For those who follow my crossfit blog, I plan to keep my WOD notes over there for awhile, until I figure out the details of working here. The most important has already been accomplished... how to get my blogspot page to not be ORANGE.
Not sure how broad in scope my writing is going to be here... one or two philosophy courses + Italian heritage + middle age hormones + five kids = plenty to say. Seriously though, writing keeps me thinking. Thinking keeps me moving. And blogging lets me do it as much or little as I want... no syllabus of directed reading and writing assignments.... no boss to have me churn out another position paper. Just me and inspiration as it comes.
Still working on the title here... it may very well change... so much more than the athlete that needs awakening.
